The Social Ourtreach Committee

Mission: To offer opportunities to our congregation for ministry, support and service in the larger community.

The Unitarian Coastal Fellowship has a history of response wherever we find need, and to social justice issues as they arise. In the past, the Fellowship has helped to rebuild African American Churches torched in hate crimes, prepared and served lunches for house-building volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, provided food, money and gifts for those in need, aided in the aftermath of hurricane clean up and reconstruction, organized and led county-wide peace demonstrations, and regularly supported the annual Beach Sweep environmental clean-up of our waterways. We have actively involved ourselves in  Ethical Eating education; as a Sister Cities Community of San Ramon, Nicuaraga; and a Green Sanctuary.

Following are involvements of our UCF community throughout 2008 and 2009:

Support of Hope Mission:

  • Regular monthly meals for homeless shelter residents;

  • Financial counseling for clients;

  • Holiday gifts for men;

Meditation and Buddhist Sanga instruction was provided to local prison residents, and is regularly offered to the community;

Continuing Education as a “Welcoming Congregation” and host of PFLAG meetings (Second Wednesday evening of each month. Call Ann at 240-1914);

5th Sunday Non-Pledge Offerings are designated for a social outreach effort or organization;

Other:  UCF also provides tutors in the schools, supports the Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration Committee with food and services for the annual event, and offers venues to purchase Fair Trade coffee and chocolate in the Social Hall at UCF and in markets within the local community.

There is at UCF a recognition that a group of individuals can be more notable than one person and that we at UCF wish to join others to serve the community and world in which we live. We do this by providing educational, service, witness and advocacy opportunities for members of our congregation.

Social Outreach activities described above have been facilitated by:

Jane Hines and Miriam Green (co-chairs), Craig Matthews, Lees Hardy, Terri Thonmas, Lee and Jerry Miller, Ann Rivers, John Russell, Sally White, Sandy and George Kunkle, Penny and Mark Hooper, Betty Skulstad, Karen Baggott, Duncan McElhaney, Dail Bridges, Verne Reintjes, Sue Mathis, Ann and Ted Odell, Claire Brothers-Thorne, Carol and Dick Kidd, Tracy Rogers and Susan Schmidt.

UCF is a Green Sanctuary , a congregation that lives out its commitment to the Earth by creating a sustainable life style for its members as individuals and as a faith community.

Opportunities for social outreach continually unfold, giving members and friends of The Unitarian Coastal Fellowship new ways to work for change and live their values. It is our intent to always be ready for spontaneous acts of caring and response to emerging needs and issues.
