PRESIDENT'S CORNER

July , 2008
Julianne Fontenoy

We began the new church year with a bang as
Morehead City provided us with a full array of fireworks shortly after we voted in our new board of trustees. The next morning we met for a full day retreat at Webb Memorial Library in the room our church used to use as a sanctuary. Catherine Graham did a wonderful job running the retreat, as a donation to the church, and left us with some valuable lessons in listening, in leadership, and in operating as a group.

The following Wednesday we had our first board meeting, at which we had the pleasure of voting in a new finance trustee: Duncan McElhaney. So now we have a full slate of officers and trustees and await only the
return of our new Vice President, Craig Hassler, from Canada to be operating at full strength.

Better communication back and forth between board and congregation is one of our goals for the year—in light of this, I will include here a brief synopsis of our decisions at the June board meeting.
·

We clarified the positions needing nominees for
next year, so that the Nominations Committee
can begin work right away: Vice President,
Secretary, Religious Education Trustee, Finance Trustee and Facilities Trustee. If you are interested in taking any of these positions in 2009-2010 church year, see Paul Fontenoy,
Frank Pizzardi, or Jesse McElhaney, who are
members of the Nomination Committee.
·

We appointed a team to streamline the Policy
Manual and bring it up to date. (Craig Hassler,
Paul Fontenoy, David Evans.)
·

We discussed a child care policy, which David
Evans has been crafting. A major issue that has emerged is that our nannies currently are not covered for liability. The most effective and
least expensive solution to this may well be to
have a volunteer on hand in the nursery each
week to oversee the nursery, to help the nanny
when needed, and as an added benefit, perhaps to find ways to help teach UU values to the littlest ones. We expect to vote on this policy next month.
·

We discussed the facilities water damage repair work being planned as well as other building upgrades needed and realized that any
renovations would best be decided in the same
conversation which clarifies what the
congregation wants the Property Acquisition
Committee’s adjusted goals to be. We are
planning a congregational meeting on the topic
in the fall. David Evans, Sue Mathis, and
Wayne Holderness are working on this.

We had a busy meeting and expect the next ones to be so too. We are an active Fellowship in the process of growing and I feel honored and challenged with the trust you have given me in electing me as your president.
