It all began with a single person, as many worthwhile endeavors do. To the late Riley Stone, the establishment of a UU fellowship in Carteret County was not an 'impossible dream. In the spring of 1980 Riley placed an ad in the local paper seeking seeking UUs in the community interested in forming a local fellowship.

Actual formation of the fellowship occurred in the course of two meetings held in October at the Webb Memorial Civic Center in Morehead City. At the first, the Rev. Todd Taylor, UUA Inter-District Representative, outlined the necessary procedure. The name Unitarian Coastal Fellowship was chosen and an application for UUA membership was prepared. Ben Wade was elected as President, Susan Fetzer as Secretary, Wilma Reusch as Treasurer. At the second meeting, bylaws were drawn up, the application for UUA membership was signed by all twenty charter members.
